Acetabular revision using a dual mobility cup as treatment for dislocation in Charnley total hip arthroplasty
The Bone & Joint Journal Apr 06, 2020
Hoggett L, et al. - Applying a dual mobility cup (DMC), a series of acetabular revision was presented and compare this with the previous series using the posterior lip augmentation device (PLAD). Researchers conducted a retrospective review of individuals treated with either a DMC or PLAD for dislocation in individuals with a Charnley total hip arthroplasty (THA). This study assessed electronic patient records data and radiographs to ascertain operating time, length of stay, and the incidence of complications and recurrent dislocation postoperatively. This study enrolled a sum of 28 individuals who had undergone revision using a DMC for dislocation following Charnley THA between 2013 and 2017. The outcomes this research demonstrate that DMC outperforms PLAD as a treatment for dislocation in individuals with a Charnley THA. This should thus be the preferred form of treatment for these individuals despite a slightly longer operating time. Work is recently ongoing to examine outcomes of DMC over a longer follow-up period. PLAD should be applied with caution in this individual group with preference given to acetabular revision to DMC.
