Accuracy of polycystic ovarian syndrome diagnosis in the adolescent population
Journal of Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology Mar 26, 2021
Alonso Z, et al. - Researchers performed a descriptive study which was a retrospective case series to evaluate the rate of correct diagnosis of PCOS in the adolescent population (age 10-19) at Lehigh Valley Health Network, based on Pediatric Endocrine Society (PES) expert consensus criteria. Between January 1, 2012, to March 31, 2020, all female patients between the ages of 10-19 who were given the diagnosis of PCOS were involved in the study. Patients with the existence of non-PCOS causes for hyperandrogenic anovulation have been eliminated. At the time of diagnosis, 18 (45.0%) of the 40 patients in the sample met the PES criterion for PCOS. According to the study's results, more than half of the participants were over-diagnosed with PCOS based on adult criteria. In the adolescent population, the diagnosis of PCOS is often given incorrectly. In the adolescent population, most providers still use the Rotterdam criteria to diagnose PCOS.
