Meltzer AC, Burrows PK, Kirkali Z, et al. - In this secondary review of a multi-center prospective trial of people diagnosed by a CT scan with symptomatic ureteral stone < 9mm in diameter, experts examined individuals who at the beginning presented to the Emergency Department with acute renal colic in order to ascertain whether patient-reported stone passage identified stone expulsion as precisely as follow-up CT scan. A total of 403 persons were randomized in the original study, of which, 21 were eliminated and 237 underwent a follow-up CT scan. For individuals who reported capture or visualization of a ureteral stone, a follow-up CT scan might not be required to authenticate stone passage. Moreover, in order to verify passage, for people who do not capture their stone or visualize stone passage, imaging should be taken into consideration.
