Accuracy of computed tomography in diagnosis of intra-abdominal injuries in stable patients with anterior abdominal stab wounds: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Academic Emergency Medicine May 03, 2018
Baron BJ, et al. - The accuracy of computed tomography of abdomen and pelvis (CTAP) was examined for diagnosis of intraabdominal injuries requiring therapeutic laparotomy (THER-LAP) in ED patients with abdominal stab wound (AASW). Researchers also assessed if a negative CT scan without a period of observation is sufficient to safely discharge a hemodynamically stable, asymptomatic AASW patient. Findings suggested a high prevalence of injuries requiring THER-LAP in patients with a negative CT scan. Almost half of those injuries involved the small bowel. They, thereby, suggest a negative CT scan alone without an observation period as inadequate for excluding significant intraabdominal injuries in stable AASW patients.
