Baron BJ, et al. - Researchers here examined the accuracy of computed tomography of abdomen and pelvis (CTAP) for diagnosis of intra-abdominal injuries requiring Therapeutic Laparotomy (THER-LAP) in Emergency Department patients with AASW. They also ascertained whether a negative CT scan without a period of observation was sufficient to safely discharge a hemodynamically stable, asymptomatic anterior abdominal stab wound (AASW) patient. In patients with a negative CT scan, they observed a high prevalence of injuries requiring THER-LAP. Almost half of those injuries involved the small bowel.
