Accuracy of brain natriuretic peptide for diagnosing pulmonary hypertension in severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia
Neonatology May 22, 2019
Avitabile CM, et al. - In this retrospective cohort study, researchers identified the accuracy of BNP in diagnosing PH in infants born <32 weeks of gestation with severe bronchopulmonary dysplasia (sBPD) against echocardiogram (echo). The study sample consisted of all infants with sBPD with an echo and BNP within a 24-h period, at ≥36 weeks postmenstrual age. Data reported that the area under the ROC curve for diagnosing PH using BNP was 0.74. In this cohort of preterm infants with sBPD, BNP, relative to concurrent echo, showed moderate accuracy for diagnosing PH. In this population, BNP may help rule in PH, but it has little usefulness to rule out the disease.
