Access to the waiting list and to kidney transplantation for people living with HIV: A national registry study
American Journal of Transplantation Jun 20, 2019
Tourret J, et al. - People living with HIV (PLHIV) vs HIV-uninfected controls were compared regarding access to kidney transplantation (KT) waiting list (WL) and to KT. From the REIN (the national Renal Epidemiology and Information Network registry), researchers retrieved data of 255 PLHIV (median age 47 years); of these, 180 (71%) were also found in the French Hospital Database on HIV (FHDH-ANRS CO4) including 126 (70%) known to be on antiretroviral therapy with HIV viral suppression (VS). Five years following the start of dialysis, 65% of treated PLHIV with VS vs 76% of HIV-uninfected controls were enrolled on a WL. Treated PLHIV with VS also showed less frequent and delayed access to KT. These findings suggest the difficulties that are continuously faced by the PLHIV to access KT.
