Acceptance and commitment therapy for primary headache sufferers: A randomized controlled trial of efficacy
The Journal of Pain Aug 08, 2020
Vasiliou VS, Karademas EC, Christou Y, et al. - A randomized clinical trial was designed to compare an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)-based group headache-specific intervention to wait-list control, on disability, distress, medical utilization, functioning, and quality of life. Researchers randomized a total of 94 individuals with primary headache (84% women; Mage = 43 years; 87.35% migraine diagnosis) into two groups (47 in each). Compared to controls, there was a significant improvement of disability after an ACT approach focusing on acceptance and values-based activities, functioning, and quality of life among patients with primary headaches. The utility and efficacy of ACT in localized pain conditions was supported in these findings.
