Acceptance and commitment therapy for prevention of chronic post-surgical pain and opioid use in at-risk veterans: A pilot randomized controlled study
The Journal of Pain May 24, 2018
Dindo L, et al. - In this preliminary study, researchers sought to assess the efficacy of a one-day Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) workshop in “at-risk” Veterans for the prevention of chronic pain and opioid use following orthopedic surgery. A comparison of the effects of a 1-day preventive behavioral intervention (ACT) to treatment-as-usual was undertaken in at-risk veterans undergoing orthopedic surgery. Veterans receiving ACT presented quicker cessation of pain and opioid use at 3 months following the intervention. Findings thereby suggested the potential of pre-operative pain management in preventing chronic post-surgical pain.
