Accelerated risk of premature ischemic stroke in 5-year survivors of nasopharyngeal carcinoma
The Oncologist Mar 28, 2019
Chen MC, et al. - This is the first population-based study on survivors of long-term nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), which is endemic in Taiwan. In 5-year survivors of NPC following radiotherapy (RT) or concurrent chemoradiation therapy (CCRT), researchers assessed the risk of ischemic stroke. They used the stratified Cox regression models to obtain the risk of ischemic stroke, with adjustment for age, treatment modality, comorbidities, and socioeconomic characteristics. A total of 3,016 NPC survivors who had received RT (n = 959) or CCRT (n = 2,057) and 15,080 controls were matched for age, sex, income, and urbanization level. Investigators found that, compared to the general population, the risk of stroke in NPC survivors was higher and the onset age was 10 years earlier. For proper prevention and management, future survival care should include ischemic stroke as a late complication.
