Abortion method preference among people presenting for abortion care

Wingo E, Ralph LJ, Kaller S, et al. - Researchers sought to determine the preferred method of abortion. In addition, they investigated the interpersonal and cultural factors linked with preference, and whether more obstacles to care are experienced by people presenting past 10 weeks gestation among people with a preference for medication abortion. People aged 15 to 45 years presenting to 4 U.S. abortion clinics were invited to complete a self-administered, anonymous iPad survey prior to seeing the health care provider. The survey was initiated by the majority (784 [77%]) of those approached (1,092) and responses to the preference question were obtained from 712 individuals. A method was preferred by most (597 [84%]) of these participants: 246 (41%) preferred medication abortion and 351 (59%) an in-clinic procedure. Delayed presentation to care may hamper the ability to obtain the desired method. Preference for medication abortion was observed in correlation with pregnancy-related stigma and misinformation.
