Aberrant CEACAM19 expression is associated with metastatic phenotype in penile cancer
Cancer Management and Research Jan 23, 2019
Hu X, et al. - In this retrospective study, the expression of CEACAM19 as well as its regulatory mechanisms were investigated, using immunohistochemistry, in 64 penile cancer patients who underwent penectomy between 2011 and 2015. Researchers assessed the cell viability and tumorigenic potential of penile cancer cell line as well as the impact of CEACAM19 depletion on cell migration and invasion in penile cancer cells. They observed a differential expression of CEACAM19 in non-cancerous and penile cancer tissues. Nodal and distant metastasis were observed in significant association with CEACAM19 over-expression, which also predicted unfavorable cancer-specific survival. In Penl1 cells, suppressed cell proliferation, reduced colony formation, and attenuated cell migration and invasion were seen due to depletion of CEACAM19 expression. The impacts of CEACAM19 might be a result of its function in regulating the Smad2/3 activation. Overall, overly expressed CEACAM19 could be a potential prognostic biomarker for clinical management of penile cancer and a therapeutic benefit might be seen with strategies targeting CEACAM19-regulated signaling pathways.
