Abdominal aortic calcification, cardiac troponin I and atherosclerotic vascular disease mortality in older women

Heart Jan 05, 2022

Teh R, Prince RL, Sim M, et al. - Researchers aimed at evaluating if information attained using two inexpensive measures of atherosclerotic vascular diseases (ASVD), abdominal aortic calcification (AAC) and high-sensitivity cardiac troponin I (hs-cTnI), for 10-year ASVD mortality and all-cause mortality risk in older women is complementary to each other.

  • Between 2003 and 2013, follow-up of 908 community-dwelling women without prevalent ASVD (≥ 75 years) was performed.

  • There were deaths of 276 (30.4%) women during the follow-up; 138 of these (15.2%) were ASVD-related deaths.

  • Correlation of higher AAC and raised hs-cTnI was observed with higher risk of ASVD mortality and all-cause mortality, independent of each other.

  • Women at very high risk were identified by performing stratification by moderate to extensive AAC and elevated hs-cTnI.
