A systematic review on the protective effect of N-acetyl cysteine against diabetes-associated cardiovascular complications

American Journal of Cardiovascular Drugs Apr 17, 2018

Dludla PV, et al. - N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) has shown strong ameliorative properties in an increasing number of experimental studies, so researchers analyzed available data from studies reporting on its cardioprotective potential as monotherapy or in combination with other therapies against diabetes-associated cardiovascular complications. The ARRIVE and JBI appraisal guidelines were used to assess the quality of individual studies. The data supported the beneficial potential of NAC with regard to a number of diabetes-associated complications. By inhibiting oxidative stress, NAC displayed strong potential for protecting the heart in diabetics at risk of myocardial infarction. Its role as a preventive against both ischemia and non-ischemic-associated cardiac damage is also of interest.
