A systematic review of the bidirectional relationship between depressive symptoms and cardiovascular health
Preventive Medicine Dec 02, 2021
Ogunmoroti O, Osibogun O, Spatz ES, et al. - Findings indicate that a bidirectional association could exist between depressive symptoms and cardiovascular health (CVH).
A 2-fold increase in cardiovascular disease risk has been observed in the presence of depression, but the link between depression and CVH, as reflected by the American Heart Association's CVH metrics, is incompletely understood.
Via a systematic review, EMBASE, Google Scholar, PubMed and Web of Science were explored, and studies providing information on depressive symptoms and CVH were selected.
Of 132 screened articles, 11 studies (8 studies were cross-sectional while 3 studies used a prospective cohort design) were included comprising 101,825 participants.
In five studies, an association was revealed between participants with unfavorable CVH and depressive symptoms.
A link between participants with depressive symptoms and unfavorable CVH was demonstrated in six studies.
