A systematic review of non-pharmacological interventions to improve nighttime sleep among residents of long-term care settings
BMC Geriatrics Jun 22, 2018
Capezuti E, et al. - The impact of non-pharmacological interventions aimed at improving nighttime sleep among long-term care residents was investigated via a systematic review of the relevant literature data. They analyzed articles identified via the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews guided searches of five databases (MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Scopus, and Cochrane Library). Experimental or quasi-experimental studies focusing on subjectively or objectively measured nighttime sleep in long-term care settings (nursing homes, assisted-living facilities, or group homes) were included. Increased daytime light exposure, nighttime use of melatonin, and acupressure yielded the most promising results as interventions. Overall, the potential utility was suggested for non-pharmacological interventions to improve sleep for such populations.
