A systematic review of multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection

The Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal Nov 05, 2020

Kaushik A, Gupta S, Sood M, et al. - In view of recent reports describing severe manifestations associated with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) called multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C), researchers sought to conduct analysis of studies for this novel syndrome with the aim to better understand the effective management among affected children. They identified a total of 328 articles via performing an extensive search by combining the terms multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children and coronavirus infection or using the term multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children in bibliographic electronic databases (PubMed, EMBASE, and CINAHL) and in preprint servers (BioRxiv.org and MedRxiv.org) following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Metaanalyses guidelines. The final analysis was performed including 16 studies with 655 participants (3 months–20 years of age). The data were retrieved from studies from the United States, Europe, and South Asia. The main presenting symptoms were fever, GI symptoms, and Kawasaki Disease-like symptoms among patients with MIS-C. Although critical illness was reported in most patients, requiring intensive care and immunomodulatory therapies, the majority had favorable outcomes with low-mortality rates.
