A systematic review of enhanced recovery after surgery for vascular operations
Journal of Vascular Surgery Mar 29, 2019
McGinigle KL, et al. - Via performing this systematic review in accordance with Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, researchers sought to characterize the use and effectiveness of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) in all types of vascular and endovascular operations. The final analysis comprising 19 studies (four randomized controlled trials and 15 observational studies) yielded minimal poor- to moderate-quality evidence describing the use of ERAS pathways in open aortic operations. Despite a high risk of bias in most of the studies, all of them mentioned improvements in length of stay, postoperative diet, and ambulation. This supports considering the implementation of ERAS pathways as reasonable in the care of vascular surgery patients, specifically those undergoing open aortic operations. However, until further research is done, many of the details will be based on limited data and extrapolation from other surgical specialties.
