A systematic review and meta-analysis on outcomes and complications of percutaneous endoscopic vs radiologic gastrostomy for enteral feeding
Journal of Clinical Gastroenterology Sep 13, 2018
Strijbos D, et al. - Using standardized tools for assessing bias, researchers performed a systematic review using Medline, Embase, and Cochrane to expansively review percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) and percutaneous radiologic gastrostomy (PRG) outcomes. For infectious complications, procedure-related mortality, or 30-day mortality, no differences were found. Tube-related complications were higher in PRG while PEG exhibited the lower risk of tube-related complications. Subgroup analysis showed PEG to be favorable in head and neck cancer (HNC) due to lower rates of procedure-related mortality and tube-related complications. In the decision process, local experience and availability should be taken into account.
