A systematic review and meta-analysis of the risk of dementia associated with benzodiazepine use, after controlling for protopathic bias
CNS Drugs Jun 23, 2018
Penninkilampi R, et al. - Researchers examined if the risk of dementia is linked to benzodiazepine use in elderly patients, after controlling for protopathic bias. Observational studies were identified with no language limits including more than 50 cases, satisfactory evaluation of benzodiazepine exposure, and dependable diagnosis of dementia from the MEDLINE, PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, LILACS and CENTRAL electronic databases through to June 5, 2018. Due to protopathic bias, the relationship between benzodiazepine use and dementia incidence was not purely an artifact. Findings suggested that reduction of inappropriate benzodiazepine prescription would probably weaken dementia risk.
