A systematic review and meta-analysis of the effectiveness of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors and memantine in treating the cognitive symptoms of dementia

Knight R, et al. - The researchers carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine the effects of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (AChEIs) and memantine on Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores. They identified eighty trials. At 6 months, pooled effect estimates were in favour of both AChEIs and memantine. According to the findings obtained, AChEIs showed a modest effect vs control on MMSE scores which was moderated by dementia subtype and for memantine the effect was smaller.
