A systematic review and meta-analysis of the associations between endometriosis and irritable bowel syndrome
European Journal of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Reproductive Biology Feb 02, 2020
Saidi K, et al. - Via performing a systematic review, researchers sought to compile published original articles in English that have compared correlations between endometriosis and irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Exploring PubMed, Web of Science and EMBASE, they identified 254 publications; of these, 13 met the inclusion criteria. Seemingly, a twofold or threefold risk to fulfill the criteria for IBS was observed, in addition, among women diagnosed with endometriosis. As per the four studies included in the meta-analysis, the summary risk estimate of 2.39 was evident. As per some studies, women initially diagnosed with IBS exhibit a threefold risk of having an endometriosis diagnosis. Findings suggest a coexistence of gastrointestinal symptoms fulfilling the Rome criteria in patients with endometriosis. However, it remains unclear whether there is true comorbidity between endometriosis and IBS, or whether the gastrointestinal symptomatology in endometriosis is related to the medication.
