A systematic review and meta-analysis of hyperbaric oxygen therapy for diabetic foot ulcers with arterial insufficiency

Journal of Vascular Surgery Jan 27, 2020

Brouwer RJ, et al. - Via conducting a systematic review, researchers sought to determine the effects of hyperbaric oxygen treatment (HBOT) as an adjunctive therapy to standard treatment for patients with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) with a peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD). They analyzed 11 studies totaling 729 patients; these included 7 randomized clinical trials, 2 controlled clinical trials, and 2 retrospective cohorts. As per evidence gained, major amputation rate, but not wound healing, improve with undertaking adjuvant HBOT in patients with DFUs and PAOD. As the trials included a wide range of patients, they suggest performing better patient selection for defining the patients with DFUs and PAOD that may benefit most from HBOT as standard adjunctive treatment.
