A systematic review and meta-analysis of associations between clinical prostatitis and prostate cancer: New estimates accounting for detection bias
Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Jul 30, 2019
Langston M, et al. - As none of the earlier meta-analyses estimating summary positive links between clinical prostatitis and prostate cancer have accounted for detection bias, researchers analyzed studies examining the link between clinical prostatitis and prostate cancer. Among all studies, summary odds ratios were calculated using random-effects meta-analysis and in strata defined by methods intended to lower detection bias. They found that in all 38 eligible studies combined, men with a history of clinical prostatitis had increased odds of prostate cancer, but this estimate was reduced to null among studies that carried out the most meticulous analyses to control detection bias. Overall, detection bias was suggested to be the likely reason for the previously observed positive links between clinical prostatitis and prostate cancer.
