A system to determine risk of osteoporosis in patients with autoimmune hepatitis
Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology Jun 06, 2019
Schmidt T, et al. - In this retrospective cross-sectional study, researchers identified specific risk factors for osteoporosis in patients with autoimmune hepatitis (AIH), and developed a scoring system that could be used to identify patients at increased risk for osteoporosis. The study sample consisted of 211 patients (mean age: 56.8 years; 79.1% women) in Germany with an AIH diagnosis from 2012 to 2017 and an indication for bone mineral status evaluation. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry was used to measure bone mineral density. According to these measurements, 15.6% of subjects had osteoporosis and 42.9% were in the range for osteopenia. In patients 50 years or older, the prevalence of osteoporosis was 19.2%. Independent risk factors for bone loss included older age, duration of corticosteroid use, low body mass index, and liver fibrosis.
