A subgroup of chronic low back pain patients with central sensitization
Clinical Journal of Pain Oct 10, 2019
Aoyagi K, He J, Nicol AL, et al. - Compared with FM-negative chronic low back pain (CLBP) patients, researchers investigated neurophysiological features and psychosocial symptoms in a subgroup of FM-positive CLBP. In total, 46 candidates with CLBP and 22 pain-free controls completed outcome measures of the 2011 FM survey, pressure pain threshold (PPT) and conditioned pain modulation (CPM) tests, and psychosocial questionnaires. According to findings, the 2011 FM survey identified 22 candidates with CLBP as FM positive. FM-positive CLBP participants reported lower PPT values of the thumbnail and lower back, lower thumbnail CPM values, and more severe pain catastrophizing, anxiety, and depression symptoms than participants of FM-negative CLBP. The findings suggest a subgroup of patients with CLBP showing CS signs and symptoms. Associations between subjective and objective CS tests suggest that it is possible to use the 2011 FM survey to assess the role of CS in CLBP in clinical practice.
