A social empowerment intervention to prevent intimate partner violence against women in a microfinance scheme in Tanzania: Findings from the MAISHA cluster randomized controlled trial
The Lancet Global Health Sep 24, 2019
Kapiga S, Harvey S, Mshana G, et al. - Researchers performed a cluster randomized controlled trial among women taking part in a microfinance loan scheme in Mwanza city, Tanzania in order to assess the effect of a violence prevention intervention delivered to these women. Sixty-six microfinance groups were randomly assigned to receive either the intervention [ie, the intervention arm; 33 groups (n = 544 women)] or be wait-listed for the intervention after the trial [ie, the control arm; 33 groups (n = 505 women)]. Weekly meeting for loan repayments was done with women in both arms of the trial. The ten-session MAISHA intervention that aims to empower women and prevent intimate partner violence was implemented only among those in the intervention arm. Women who participated in the intervention arm had reduced reporting of both physical or sexual intimate partner violence, although the effect was greater for physical intimate partner violence. This suggests preventability of intimate partner violence in high-risk settings such as Tanzania.
