A single surgeon series comparing the outcomes of a cruciate retaining and medially-stabilised total knee arthroplasty using kinematic alignment principles
Journal of Arthroplasty Sep 27, 2019
French SR, et al. - A prospective comparison was conducted between two groups (44 Cruciate Retaining (CR)-TKA vs 46 Medially-Stabilised (MS)-TKA) to contrast the short-term functional outcomes and quality of life, using patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and Range of Motion (ROM), between a CR and MS TKA. In comparison with the CR-TKA, on the Forgotten Joint Score (FJS), the KOOS-12 Quality of Life subscale and the KOOS Quality of Life subscale, patients who underwent an MS-TKA scored significantly better. No variance between the groups in all evaluated PROMs or ROM, preoperatively and one year postoperatively was observed. In conclusion, patients who underwent the MS-TKA vs those who underwent a CR-TKA had significantly better scores on the FJS and the quality of life subscale of the KOOS and KOOS-12. All other evaluated PROMs and ROM were similar between the two groups and illustrated that both implants expedited symptom alleviation and improved daily function at one year postoperatively. These findings recommend that at short-term follow-up, the MS device is more inclined to permit a patient to “forget” that a joint was ever replaced and restore their quality of life. However, long-term evaluation of MS-TKA design outcomes in larger cohorts is suggested.
