A simple screening tool to predict outcomes in older adults undergoing emergency general surgery
Journal of the American Geriatrics Society Oct 12, 2018
Zattoni D, et al. - Researchers evaluated whether the Flemish version of the Triage Risk Screening Tool (fTRST) can be used to accurately evaluate frailty in older adults undergoing emergency abdominal surgery. Study participants included 110 individuals aged ≥ 70 years who were consecutively admitted to the emergency surgery unit with an immediate need for abdominal surgery between December 2015 and May 2016. They found that the fTRST is an effective tool for the prediction of mortality, morbidity, and length of stay following emergency surgery and, thus, can be used to predict postoperative cause, determine care goals, and strategize for the involvement of a dedicated geriatric care team.
