A retrospective analysis of 62,571 cases of perioperative adverse events in thoracic surgery at a tertiary care teaching hospital in a developing country

Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery Jun 07, 2019

Li Q, et al. - Researchers focused on the causes, treatment and prognosis of perioperative adverse events (AEs) in thoracic surgery. Through the Anaesthesia Information Management System, they gathered 62,571 thoracic surgery anaesthesia records. From the “adverse events registration” subsystem, they extracted 150 cases of perioperative serious AEs. Findings revealed a 0.2% rate of perioperative AEs post-thoracic surgery. Detection and immediate treatment of AEs is necessary. Respiratory management was recognized as a critical factor in anaesthesia-related events. Cardiac arrest and massive haemorrhage were major clinical manifestations of surgery-associated events. A major contributor to AEs was cardiac arrest, the adverse results of which could be prevented with timely detection and proper treatment. A surgeon’s early diagnosis and appropriate interventions could avoid massive haemorrhage, which was identified as an important cause of death.
