A relationship between blood levels of otolin-1 and vitamin D
Otology & Neurotology Apr 10, 2018
Parham K, et al. - Given that otoconia degeneration contributed to idiopathic benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (iBPPV) and a lack of vitamin D could affect otoconia structure and integrity, experts proposed a negative relationship between vitamin D levels and levels of a proposed circulatory biomarker for otolithic degeneration, otolin-1. Subjects from the age of 22 to 95 years old were included in this study without known vertigo. As per data, vitamin D and otolin-1 were seen to be related. Abnormally low vitamin D levels were seen in the majority of subjects, but a negative correlation with high otolin-1 levels was seen only in those over 70 years of age. Results suggested that a seasonal drop in vitamin D could not be sufficient for otoconia fragmentation and ultimately iBPPV. However, chronically low vitamin D could be required to produce otoconia degeneration.
