A randomized trial evaluating bioimpedance spectroscopy vs tape measurement for the prevention of lymphedema following treatment for breast cancer: Interim analysis
Annals of Surgical Oncology May 08, 2019
Ridner SH, et al. - A total of 508 patients were enrolled and randomized to either surveillance with a tape measure (TM) or bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) in this randomized controlled trial assessing lymphedema progression rates using volume measurements determined via the circumference using a TM or BIS. As per interim results, the absolute rates of progression of breast cancer-related lymphedema needing complex decongestive physiotherapy were lowered by about 10% with post-treatment surveillance BIS; this was a clinically meaningful improvement. Outcomes thus support using BIS for post-treatment surveillance to identify subclinical BCRL and start early intervention.
