Olson MD, et al. - Among adult patients, researchers ascertained if liposomal bupivacaine (Exparel) was safe and efficacious in the management of posttonsillectomy pain. For the first 24 hours after surgery, improved pain intensity scores with no adverse complications were demonstrated with the injection of liposomal bupivacaine in the posttonsillectomy wound bed vs patients who did not receive the injection. In adult tonsillectomy patients, use of liposomal bupivacaine appears to have a minimal indication for use because of the limited pain reduction and increased cost.
