A randomized, controlled trial of comparison of a continuous femoral nerve block (CFNB) and continuous epidural infusion (CEI) using 0.2% ropivacaine for postoperative analgesia and knee rehabilitation after total knee arthroplasty (TKA)
Journal of Anaesthesiology Clinical Pharmacology Sep 06, 2019
Gandhi HJ, et al. - For postoperative pain relief after TKA, researchers compared CFNB and CEI techniques using ropivacaine. This study included 40 patients. Participants were randomly allotted to group F where they received 0.2% ropivacaine through femoral catheter or to group E where they received 0.2% ropivacaine through an epidural catheter. An infusion was begun @6 ml/h postoperatively when visual analogue score (VAS) was ≥ 4. Both the groups had comparable mean VAS score, rehabilitation goals, rescue analgesic requirement, and patient's and surgeon's mean satisfaction scores. No motor blockade was found and, patients in group E experienced more number of side effects, although those were not of statistical or clinical significance. Overall, CFNB affords an alternative technique to obtain effective postoperative pain relief post-TKA.
