A randomized controlled trial of bedtime music for insomnia disorder
Journal of Sleep Research Jan 28, 2019
Jespersen KV, et al. - Researchers conducted an assessor-blinded randomized controlled trial to assess the impact of bedtime music listening, often used as a self-help tool to alleviate insomnia, as a strategy for improving insomnia. For this investigation, they included 57 individuals with insomnia disorder who were equally randomized to either a music intervention group, audiobook control group, or a waitlist control group. According to findings, listening to music at bedtime had a positive effect on sleep perception and quality of life, but no clear effect on the severity of insomnia. Overall, the investigators concluded that music is safe and easy to administer, but further research is required to evaluate the impact of music on different subtypes of insomnia, as well as an adjunctive or preventive intervention.
