A randomized controlled trial of a lifestyle intervention with longitudinal follow‐up on ovarian dysmorphology in women with polycystic ovary syndrome
Clinical Endocrinology Mar 20, 2020
Kazemi M, et al. - Researchers conducted this randomized controlled trial to compare the impacts of a pulse‐based diet (lentils, beans, split peas and chickpeas) with Therapeutic Lifestyle Changes (TLC) diet on ultrasonographic markers of ovarian morphology, hyperandrogenism and menstrual irregularity in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Participants in the study were women, aged 18 to 35 years, with PCOS. Thirty women randomized to pulse-based groups, and 31 to TLC groups completed an intervention of 16 weeks without energy restriction. Both interventions improved ovarian dysmorphology, hyperandrogenism and PCOS menstrual irregularity, and no diet seemed to be superior to improving reproductive outcomes. The findings emphasize the value of longitudinal surveillance in PCOS for sustainable adherence to newly adopted healthy lifestyle behaviors and reproductive health.
