A randomized controlled trial comparing subconjunctival injection to direct scleral application of mitomycin C in trabeculectomy

American Journal of Ophthalmology Jul 09, 2020

Do JL, Xu BY, Wong B, et al. - Researchers conducted this prospective, randomized, interventional study to compare the effectiveness of intraoperative scleral application with subconjunctival injection of mitomycin C (MMC) in trabeculectomy. The sample consisted of patients older than 18 years with medically uncontrolled glaucoma and no previous history of incisional glaucoma surgery. Candidates (n = 100) were randomized into groups matched for baseline demographics, glaucoma status, and baseline intraocular pressure (IOP). At six months, there were no major differences in surgical success between the injection and sponge group, mean IOP, number of glaucoma medications, bleb height, bleb extension, bleb vascularity, or rates of complications. Both MMC delivery techniques (subconjunctival injection and direct scleral application) resulted in comparable surgical outcomes and bleb morphologies.
