A randomized clinical trial of motivational enhancement therapy for alcohol problems in partner violent men
Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment Apr 08, 2018
Murphy CM, et al. - Researchers examined the efficacy of brief alcohol intervention [Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) or Alcohol Education (AE)] in the context of community-based treatment for partner violence. It was noted that compared to AE, MET produced greater acknowledgment of alcohol problems. Findings revealed a significant change from baseline to 12-month follow-up for both conditions in substance use and Intimate Partner Violence (IPV). MET and AE showed no significant difference for substance use and IPV outcomes. Results thereby encourage continued use of brief alcohol interventions in community IPV services. However, no evidence of a unique benefit of MET in reducing alcohol use in this population was gained.
