A randomized clinical trial comparing vaginal laser therapy to vaginal estrogen therapy in women with genitourinary syndrome of menopause: The VeLVET Trial

Paraiso MF, Ferrando CA, Sokol ER, et al. - Researchers performed a comparison of 6-month effectiveness and safety of fractionated CO2 laser vs estrogen cream for the treatment of vaginal dryness/genitourinary syndrome of menopause. They performed a multicenter, randomized trial enrolling 69 women; of these, 62 completed the 6-month protocol; 30 women were randomized to the laser and 32 to estrogen cream from June 2016 to September 2017. Outcomes revealed the achievement of similar improvement in genitourinary syndrome of menopause symptoms as well as urinary and sexual function using fractionated CO2 vaginal laser and vaginal estrogen treatment. Among participants, 70% to 80% were satisfied or very satisfied with either treatment; no serious adverse events were reported.
