A randomized blind controlled non-inferiority trial to compare the effectiveness of trigger point injections performed with normal saline (NS) and conventional active drug mix CADM in patients with myofascial pain syndromes
The American Journal of Emergency Medicine Aug 29, 2019
Roldan CJ, et al. - The effectiveness of trigger-point-injection (TPI) with a conventional active drug mixture (CADM) vs that with NS alone was investigated in patients with myofascial pain syndrome (MPS) presenting to the emergency department (ED). Among 48 adults with MPS diagnosed in the ED, researchers randomized 23 to receive TPI with NS and rest to receive or TPI with CADM. Both groups displayed a significant reduction in pain after TPI. Findings suggest that TPI can control pain independent of the injectate among cases of MPS in the ED. Given the lower cost and more favorable side effect profile, TPI with NS may be preferred over CADM.
