A randomised clinical trial of buffered tumescent local anaesthesia during endothermal ablation for superficial venous incompetence
European Journal of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery Jul 05, 2018
Nandhra S, et al. - Researchers gauged the potential to reduce peri-procedural pain and improve patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs), including quality of life (QoL) using tumescent local anaesthesia (TLA) buffered to physiological pH in patients undergoing endovenous thermal ablation (EVTA) for superficial venous incompetence (SVI). In these patients, a significantly lower peri-procedural pain experience was offered by buffered TLA and should replace current tumescent formulae. Over the subsequent week, pain scores and analgesia were equivalent. At week 1, Short Form-36 (SF-36) Bodily Pain domain scores were significantly better in the BT. Between the groups, Aberdeen Varicose Vein Questionnaire (AVVQ), SF-36, and EuroQol 5 Dimensions Questionnaire (EQ-5D) scores were otherwise similar throughout follow up and improved significantly over baseline. In both groups, high technical success was noted with no major complications and few minor complications.
