A prospective study of the association between physical activity and risk of prostate cancer defined by clinical features and TMPRSS2:ERG
European Urology Jun 15, 2019
Pernar CH, et al. - Researchers prospectively examined how physical activity is associated with the risk of prostate cancer (PCa) defined by clinical features and TMPRSS2:ERG. They studied data from 49,160 men (aged 40–75 years) who were enrolled in the Health Professionals Follow-up Study, which were collected at baseline and every 2 years with > 90% follow-up. Total and vigorous physical activity were measured in metabolic equivalent of task-h/wk. During 26 years of follow-up, PCa developed in 6,411 men overall, and lethal disease developed in 888. Furthermore, the risk of advanced and lethal PCa was lower in correlation to vigorous physical activity. Overall, study findings supported the link between vigorous physical activity and lower risk of advanced and lethal PCa, and provides novel evidence for a lower risk of TMPRSS2:ERG-positive disease.
