A prospective study of intraprostatic inflammation, focal atrophy, and progression to lethal prostate cancer
Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Sep 27, 2019
Zhang Y, Zhou CK, Rencsok EM, et al. - Researchers investigated the prognostic significance of inflammation and focal atrophy, which are common features adjacent to prostate tumors. In the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study and Physicians' Health Study, 1,035 men diagnosed with prostate cancer were studied. Lethal prostate cancer developed in 153 men during a median follow-up of 12 years. Eighty-four percent and 30% of men had histologic evidence of chronic inflammation and acute inflammation, respectively. An inverse association of both chronic and acute inflammation with lethal prostate cancer was observed in age- and lifestyle-adjusted models. Hence better prognosis was evident for prostate cancer patients who had histologic evidence of inflammation, particularly chronic inflammation, in prostate cancer tissue.
