A prospective, randomized, multi-center study of intraosseous basivertebral nerve ablation for the treatment of chronic low back pain
The Spine Journal Jun 27, 2019
Khalil J, et al. - Through a prospective, parallel, open-label randomized controlled trial (RCT) conducted at 20 U.S. sites on 140 patients with chronic low back pain (LBP) of at least 6 months duration suspected to have vertebrogenic related symptomatology, with Modic Type 1 or 2 vertebral endplate changes between L3 to S1, the researchers compared the effectiveness of intraosseous radiofrequency (RF) ablation of the basivertebral nerve (BVN) to regular care for the treatment of chronic LBP. Treatment could be completed in all 51 RF ablation patients. In 40 subjects, two-vertebral bodies and in 11 subjects, 3 vertebral bodies were treated. L5-S1, followed by L4-5, and L4-L5-S1 were the most commonly treated segment. Hence, in patients with chronic vertebrogenic related LBP, significant improvement of pain and function at 3-months was led by minimally invasive RF ablation of the BVN.
