A prospective, randomized comparison of the LMA-protector and i-gel in paralyzed, anesthetized patients
BMC Anesthesiology Jul 10, 2019
Chang JE, et al. - Among anesthetized and paralyzed adult patients (n=110), researchers assessed the adequacy of the airway seal, insertion time, ease and accuracy of insertion, and the incidence of postoperative sore throat in relation to the use of laryngeal mask airway (LMA)-Protector vs the i-gel. In the participants, either the i-gel (n = 55) or the LMA-Protector (n = 55) was inserted. They assessed airway leak pressure as the primary outcome. The first-attempt success rate, insertion time, ease and accuracy of the device insertion, ease of gastric tube placement, blood staining on the device following removal, and incidence and severity of postoperative sore throat were all evaluated as secondary outcomes. Despite offering a better airway sealing impact, the LMA-Protector needed a longer insertion time, provided a worse fiberoptic view of the vocal cords, and induced more mucosal injury when compared to the i-gel.
