A prospective observational study of the epidemiology, management and outcomes of skin and soft tissue infections due to carbapenem-resistant enterobacteriaceae
Open Forum Infectious Diseases Aug 19, 2017
Henig O, et al. – Authors planned this study to characterize the epidemiology, management and outcomes of skin and soft tissue infection (SSTI) and colonization due to carbapenem–resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE). As per observations, patients admitted from long term care facilities (LTCFs) with CRE SSTI required surgical intervention less frequently. Sixteen percent of the patients died and nearly 50% of survivors required more intensive care upon discharge. Findings thereby indicated a unique, impactful syndrome within the CRE infection spectrum. They suggested the necessity for further studies to assess the role of surgical debridement in management of CRE–SSTI, particularly among LTCF residents.
