A prospective observational cohort study on the incidence of postoperative sore throat in the pediatric population
Paediatric Anaesthesia Nov 07, 2019
Miskovic A, et al. - Among children undergoing general anesthesia with an endotracheal tube or laryngeal mask airway, researchers focused on the incidence of postoperative sore throat as well as on independent risk factors for sore throat and the incidence of other postoperative complications such as stridor, laryngospasm, nausea and vomiting, and delayed oral intake in this prospective single-center cohort analysis. This study included 197 pediatric patients (aged 5-16 years) undergoing general, plastic, urology, renal, and orthopedic surgery. Findings revealed a common incidence of postoperative sore throat among the participants. A greater incidence was reported in relation to endotracheal intubation vs laryngeal mask airway use. Multifactorial etiology was indicated by the observed high rate of postoperative sore throat in children with endotracheal tube cuff pressures within the recommended range.
