A prospective observational cohort study on the incidence of postoperative sore throat in the paediatric population
Paediatric Anaesthesia Oct 24, 2019
Miskovic A, et al. - Among children undergoing GA with an endotracheal tube or laryngeal mask airway, researchers ascertained the incidence of postoperative sore throat in this prospective single-center cohort study. They also determined independent risk-factors for sore throat, as well as reported the incidence of other postoperative complications such as stridor, laryngospasm, nausea and vomiting, and delayed oral intake. They gathered perioperative data from November 2017 to April 2018 from children aged 5-16 years receiving general, plastic, urology, renal and orthopaedic surgery. Within 24-hours of surgery, the patients were asked to complete a postoperative questionnaire. A common incidence of postoperative sore throat was reported in children. A greater incidence was observed in relation to endotracheal intubation, compared with laryngeal mask airway use. A multifactorial aetiology was suggested by the observed high rate of postoperative sore throat in children with endotracheal tube cuff pressures within the suggested range.
