A prospective, multicenter evaluation of point-of-care ultrasound for small-bowel obstruction in the Emergency Department
Academic Emergency Medicine Mar 19, 2019
Becker BA, et al. - Via this prospective, multicenter, observational study examining 217 adult patients with potential small-bowel obstruction (SBO) presenting to the Emergency Department (ED), researchers examined the accuracy of emergency physician-performed point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) compared to computed tomography (CT) for the SBO diagnosis. In addition to bedside interpretation by an emergency physician, each POCUS was retrospectively interpreted by an expert reviewer. Outcomes suggest that POCUS was moderately sensitive but less specific for SBO when performed by a diverse group of emergency physicians across multiple EDs. Physicians with prior emergency ultrasound fellowship training and familiarity with the sonographic appearance of SBO significantly more accurately interpreted the acquired POCUS images.
