A prospective, multicenter evaluation of point-of-care ultrasound for small bowel obstruction in the Emergency Department
Academic Emergency Medicine Feb 22, 2019
Becker BA, et al. - Researchers compared the diagnostic accuracy of emergency physician-performed point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) vs computed tomography (CT) for diagnosing patients with small bowel obstruction (SBO). In the primary analysis, they included a total of 217 subjects, of whom 42.9% had SBO. Interpretation of each emergency physician-performed POCUS was done at the bedside and was done retrospectively by an expert reviewer. When performed by a diverse group of emergency physicians across many EDs, POCUS was less specific but had moderate sensitivity for SBO. Physicians with prior emergency ultrasound fellowship training and familiarity with the sonographic appearance of SBO interpreted POCUS images significantly more accurately.
